About Turosi

Turosi is a privately owned, leading food manufacturer and supplier of fresh poultry and prepared food solutions. As one of Australia’s largest producers of poultry, Turosi operates with a workforce exceeding 1200 employees across 20 sites, in addition to thousands of contractors and supporting services, including over 100 farmers. Turosi is committed to being an equal opportunity employer and places a strong emphasis on the health and safety of its diverse workforce.

Key Challenges

Turosi faced challenges in engaging its culturally diverse workforce in health and safety initiatives. Many employees viewed safety measures as mere checklist items rather than integral parts of their daily lives. This mindset posed a substantial barrier to fostering a robust health and safety culture. Additionally, the company recognised the importance of integrating physical wellbeing into its health and safety strategy to create a safer work environment.

Solution

The Better Being Complete Program

In response to these challenges, Turosi worked with Better Being to implement the Better Being Complete Program. Launched as a pilot during Safety Month in September 2023, the program’s success led to its continued rollout in 2024. The program is a comprehensive 12-month strategy designed to integrate health and wellbeing into the company’s culture through a variety of initiatives:

Key Components

  1. Monthly Leader-Led Sessions: Each month, sessions focused on different health and safety aspects are led by Health and Safety Representatives within Turosi. These sessions are crucial for driving organisational change and promoting engagement.
  1. Inclusive Resources: Recognising the diverse backgrounds of its employees, Better Being ensured that all program materials were translated into Vietnamese and Burmese. Sessions are also conducted in these languages to maximise impact.
  1. Multimedia Engagement: Infographics, leader scripts, presentation slides, and videos are utilised to reinforce the program’s messages. Media displays and QR codes are strategically placed to enhance accessibility and awareness.
  1. Wellbeing Index: A digital tool that measures employee wellbeing across four pillars—movement, mindset, nutrition, and recovery. Employees access this index via QR codes on infographics and at the end of leader-led sessions. The data collected is used to track progress and inform health and safety strategies.

Innovative Strategies

The program’s innovative approach includes involving Health and Safety Representatives in delivering sessions, fostering a sense of ownership and visibility across the workforce.

Outcomes

Positive Impact on Employee Wellbeing

The Better Being Complete Program has significantly enhanced employee engagement and wellbeing. Key outcomes include:

  1. High Engagement Levels: The program successfully engaged 90% of the workforce, with a particular focus on production and warehouse roles. The inclusive approach, with resources available in multiple languages, has been pivotal in achieving this engagement rate.
  1. Net Promoter Score (NPS): The program after the first quarter achieved an NPS of 18.1, indicating a positive reception among employees. This score reflects the program’s effectiveness in resonating with the workforce.
  1. Wellbeing Index Scores: Between February and March 2024, the average employee Wellbeing Index scores increased by 15%, with improvements of over 10% across all four pillars—movement, mindset, nutrition, and recovery. These results underscore the program’s success in enhancing physical wellbeing.

Integration into Organisational Culture

The monthly delivery of the program, tracked against internal KPIs, has ensured that health and safety have become integral to Turosi’s workplace culture. Continuous monitoring through monthly KPIs and quarterly NPS surveys allows Turosi to make data-driven decisions to enhance the program further.

The Better Being Complete Program has successfully transformed Turosi’s approach to health and safety, embedding wellbeing into the organisational DNA. By addressing the unique challenges of a culturally diverse workforce and promoting a proactive approach to wellbeing, Turosi has created a safer, healthier, and more engaged workplace. The program’s innovative strategies and impressive outcomes make it a standout example of effective workplace health and wellbeing initiatives.
